Poor airline industry! Whenever there is an article written about airlines or flying you can almost guarantee it’s a negative one.
There are people venting about disputes with airlines or on the chaos at the airport.
And then there are people, like myself, that again put flying in a negative light due to their zero tolerance for airline mishaps, or because of a fear of flying.
It’s about time we focus on the beauty of flying.
Isn’t it great that we can get to another continent in no more than ten hours? During those ten or so hours we are served food and an endless supply of drinks. People whine about airline food, but to be honest the food that we are served is no worse than what we get in a high street cafe.
You are basically in a big restaurant with an amazing view!
Then we are entertained with on demand movies, TV shows and music. So more often than not those hours (excuse the pun) fly by quickly.
For a short period in our lives we are disconnected. That is, no phones are ringing, no e-mails to send, and no doors to answer. For a few hours we are really living in the moment. This is a great opportunity for us to reflect or catch up on a good book!
Furthermore, we can marvel about the dynamics of flying. The huge piece of steel has taken off and is now flying above 25,000 feet. Amazing really!
For me, the most positive aspect about flying is the view from the aeroplane window. How else can you look down on the clouds, mountains, oceans or cities?
On the flights I have taken around the world I have captured the beauty of flying in these following photos.
This photo was taken on a route from Seattle to Alaska. We passed over the beautiful Wrangell Mountains of Alaska. It’s a wilderness best captured from the window of an aeroplane.
This photo was taken shortly after take off from San Diego Airport. When I saw the beautiful view of the San Diego Bay and Ocean I had to capture the scene.
Approaching Kathmandu Airport I looked out of the aeroplane window and was stunned by this view of the amazing Himalaya Mountain Range.
Colorado can be the most beautiful state in America to fly over. This photo was taken shortly before arriving in Denver.
We had just departed from Seattle Airport and had just got above the clouds when we saw the spectacular Mt Adams. I loved how you could only see the mountain peak above the clouds.
This photo was taken on our ascent from San Diego Airport. The Airport is in the most spectacular setting right next to San Diego Bay.
I really enjoy viewing the clouds from the plane window. These storm clouds over California are amongst the best that I have seen.
So next time you step on the plane think about the beauty of flying. It will make the whole experience so much more enjoyable!

I really appreciate your thoughts on this and couldn’t agree more. Flying is miraculous and I feel sorry for the grizzled fliers who apparently do it so often they long ago lost their amazement.
My recent 24-hours-in-planes, from Phoenix to Bangkok was made easier by the truly delightful attendants on EVA Air. And the virtual film festival I had at my disposal in the comfortable Boeing 777 was, I don’t know, joyous?
Three cheers for the airlines! What they do is incredible.

@ Earth Itinerant, Thanks for your comments; I remember going on my first flight when I was 16 years old, I was so excited that I ran onto the plane! If we could get that feeling everytime we got on a plane it would be a better experience. Its possible to get this feeling of excitement by looking at all the postives of flying!

Many a times, flying is a painful experience but at times it can be good fun specially if you get a chance to watch a great movie. Also if you are flying over scenic views then its going t be good fun.

Hi Shalu! Isn’t great when there is a good selection of movies to watch on the plane, the time goes so much more quicker then. Flying certainly can be a fun experience!

I agree with you completely Elle. A good movie does the trick all the time.

I love these photos and I couldn’t agree with you more. It is better to look at the positive side of flying otherwise we would just go crazy, especially when flying long haul. I know any time I’ve been dreading a flight, the flight has always been terrible, but when you look at the positives it’s so much better. I always buy lots of new music and wait until the flight to listen to it. That way I always have something to look forward to!

Hi Lilian! Music really does it for me too. Nothing beats listening to some good music whilst looking out at the view from the plane. Priceless!

Thanks Janit! The excitment before travels can sometimes be as good as the trip itself!
